Nosara is Costa Rica’s Hidden Gem
Nosara includes the town of Nosara plus the beach areas of Playa Guiones and Playa Pelada. Here in 1962, an American investor officially established the “American Project” in Playa Guiones, a 500-lot development with roads, water systems and electricity, making it the longest established American ex-pat community in Costa Rica. The first 250 yards from the coastline are protected so its small town feel is free from any encroaching development. Nosara is the blueprint that many other towns attempt to replicate, but just don’t come close.
Nosara’s tourist-friendly atmosphere welcomes those who come to surf, sun, explore, fish, play and relax amid an enchanting tropical atmosphere. Start your day with a yoga session at the internationally renowned Nosara Yoga Institute, followed by a typical Costa Rican breakfast at the The Gilded Iguana. How about a leisurely horseback ride along the shallows during low tide, or a crazy ATV trek up a jungle mountain trail? And of course, grab your board and paddle out into the unforgettable waves of Playa Guiones. With swell nearly 320 days a year, its never a matter of “when” to go surfing so much as it is how many days in a row your body will allow!
There’s so many activities in Nosara to choose from but don’t forget to relax! An hour nodding in a swaying hammock or a nap on the beach in the shade of a palm tree (use your sunscreen!) will revive you for the evening’s festivities. A definite “don’t miss” is the nightly exodus to the beaches for the most jaw-droppingly beautiful sunsets you’ve ever seen.
Then make your way to La Dolce Vita for a sumptuous meal and meet Roberto who will make you his best friend right away and treat you like family. This property is located near Playa Guiones - South. Same as Nosara/Guiones just further south down the beach. Also called "Nosara", Playa Guiones is one of Costa Rica's most consistent breaks. This sandy bottom beach break seems to always have a peak to surf. The beachfront here is parkland so everything is set back a couple hundred meters from the sand. This makes Guiones a very peaceful and laid back getaway. Surfing is possible all along the beach, just find yourself a peak. You may find better shape on the North end of the beach. There is also a point that sometimes breaks there. Overall a forgiving wave and great for beginners. There are many surf schools in Nosara that use this area as their classroom.
