About this property

The Puesta del Sol is a slice of old Mexico right on the beach of Troncones near Zihuatanejo.  We have 3 rooms to choose from, each with it's own personality. In the lower story of our "new" building we have our Oceanfront Mini Suite with a small tiled kitchen. The room is split level and very large with a king size and twin bed. Also on the lower level is the Mountain View Room with a king size or two twin beds (a third twin can be added). These two rooms can be opened up to form a large family unit.

The second story houses the Penthouse / Owners Suite. Sleeping arrangements include a king size bed and a twin sofa bed. The suite has a beautifully tiled small kitchen which opens into a large palapa-shaded, outdoor veranda providing a sweeping view of the Troncones coastline, the best view on the beach. The suite also has an exclusive entrance to a third story sundeck.

All rooms mentioned above have hot water, private tiled baths, ceiling fans, rustic tiled floors, and large verandas complete with hammocks and lounge chairs.  And best of all the entire property is on the beach!

On the ground floor, adjacent to these rooms is the original palapa where the old restaurant was located. It is now the "just hanging out" spot furnished with traditional Mexican leather tables and chairs, and colorful hammocks from the Yucatan for your use and enjoyment.  We also offer an honor bar for beer and a large fridge for your use if you are not in any of the kitchen rooms.

We have a full time maid who will clean and freshen your room daily except on Sundays. Then there is our gardener, who keeps our grounds in perfect shape. We humbly recommend that you tip them at least $10 pesos apiece per day, more is fine if you like  Please remember life in the jungle can be exciting. Sometimes the electricity will fluctuate, so if you are planning to bring any sort of electronic equipment, please bring a good surge protector. We are at 110 volts.

About our town: Troncones is a rural fishing village of about 600 people. Not a single animal appears to be fenced in. This includes burros, horses, cows, goats, pigs, turkeys and chickens. A walk through the town definitely provides the chance to see domesticated animals in all their natural glory. We have a church, a school, a pool hall, a graveyard, soccer field, and various little tiendas (stores) selling the basic necessities. There are often local fiestas and weddings in which everyone on the beach is invited. Needless to's a friendly town.

A day at Puesta del Sol - Wake up to the sound of the ocean. Blue sky all around you, save the far off clouds which often crown the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains to the east. The glassy morning Pacific Ocean sparkles in the golden sunlight. Take a walk on the fresh, tide swept sand and watch the pelicans dive behind the breaking waves. Scan the horizon for the tell tale water spouts of whales passing by.

Sip your morning coffee and enjoy a little breakfast at one of the nearby restaurants while planning just what adventure you'll experience today. A long ride on your longboard at Troncones point break, or maybe some fun waves to yourself right in front of the house?  A horseback ride through the jungle? Or a walk up the beach to check out the tide pools? Then lunch alfresco on fresh red snapper or lobster.

After a massage followed by the compulsory siesta, you'll want a late afternoon swim to get you ready for the night's beginning. As the sun sets, you might want to try the famous Troncones margaritas. The flocks of pelicans that began your day now end it as they head south down the coast for their nightly resting place. You watch the sky slowly turn into the blues and reds of dusk and scan the horizon for the elusive "green flash" (nothing to do with the margaritas) just as the sun disappears into the far off waves.

Little by little the stars and planets take shape in the black sky. Orion and Venus twinkle on the water's surface and the moon rises as the fireflies play in the grass. A candlelit dinner with the sand beneath your feet and good conversation that always follows a happy day. As the evening ends, you walk down our country lane under the star-filled sky, so bright it lights your way home to La Puesta del Sol.

As you lie in your bed, the gentle night sounds of the tropical geckos and crickets chirp in harmony with the ocean waves promising another perfect day tomorrow.

Hisitory - We purchased La Puesta del Sol (The Place of the Sunset) in 1993. At that time, the house was a typical palapa (a roof made of palm fronds) beach restaurant. We were content to let it operate as such under the watchful eye of Doña Nica (a celebrated cook in the village), who continued to dish up the daily catch and the best oysters in town.

In 1994, after a very interesting night trying to sleep in one of the restaurant's storage rooms, we decided to add a room for us to stay in when we were in town. One simple idea led to another.... Why not a place for our friends too?.... Then why not a room or two to rent as well?.... A year and a half later we had a beautiful two story building with a palapa-shaded roof sundeck. We added a few coconut palms, some banana trees, and the largest lawn in Troncones. Doña Nica now has her own restaurant a short walk up the beach.

This property is located near S. Troncones Beach. Beach break peaks up and down this 3 mile stretch. There are better surf spots nearby but with the right conditions this can be a really fun spot to pick your own peak and surf without a crowd. Recommended if you're staying in one of the beachfront homes or inns.

This property is also located near Troncones Point. A truly great left hand point that can break for long rides up to 200 meters offering big fast walls for the intermediate surfer. The bottom is rocky with occasional urchins on the inside so watch your step. Check the conditions from your hammock at one of the surf front homes. All in all this is a goofy foot paradise!
