Pavones Overview
Pavones is best known for one thing... a really long wave. One of the longest left-hand point breaks in Central America as a fact. Surfers have quietly been flocking here for a couple decades now. If you catch Pavones with a solid head high plus S/SW swell, it will be a ride you'll never forget.
This tucked away little village in southern Costa Rica just across Golfo Dulce from Matapalo, has missed much of the development that has happened further north at places such as Tamarindo and Jaco. It's not for lack of waves though. Pavones has traditionally been very hard to reach with rough roads and small bridge crossing rivers. Things get progressively easier each year however and the influx of visitors increases as well.
If you're looking for a taste of Costa Rica of 20 years ago with lots of jungle, friendly locals and great waves, give Pavones a try. There are numerous small inns and beach lodges to stay in. If you're looking for big mega resorts and infinity pools however, you'll have to go elsewhere (or come in 10-15 years).
Best swell season is April - October. Other breaks nearby include Playa Zancudo and Punta Banco.
