About Santa Catalina, Panama
Santa Catalina in Panama is a quiet village located at the end of the road and known for great surfing and fishing. Santa Catalina has some of the best surfing in Panama with a variety of surf spots from beginner beach breaks (El Estero) to the sometimes heavy reef break of Santa Catalina that produces one of the biggest waves in Panama. Located on the Chiriqui Gulf in the Panamanian state of Veraguas, Santa Catalina existed as a fishing village in quiet seclusion until discovered by adventurous surfers in the 1970s. Eager to keep the world class waves to themselves, Santa Catalina was kept secret by the surfers for quite sometime.
Today Santa Catalina is a "known" surf spot, though it's still considered off the beaten track. With a collection of small surf camps, cheap hotels and a few eating establishments, Catalina is popular with backpackers, adventurous divers and hardy surfers seeking great surfing, diving and fishing in a beautiful and relaxed jungle setting. If you're after upscale luxury, Santa Catalina may not be for you. Still fairly secluded, the closest town with basic services such as ATM and grocery is Soná about an hour away.
The main street in Santa Catalina is the end of the road from Soná. The pavement ends at the Santa Catalina beach where local fishing boats anchor just past the break waiting their next fishing expeditions and surf and scuba visitors mix with locals for pick up soccer games. Nearby Isla Coiba is a national park consisting of 38 islands with world class diving compared to the Galapagos and Cocos Islands. For more diving info visit Scuba Coiba
