If there is a center of the surfing universe, it's Hawaii. The Hawaiian islands have every type of surfing wave imaginable, heavy reefbreak, cloud breaks, point break, fun beach breaks, river mouths and more.  Each island has it's own personality but in general you'll find powerful surf, warm temperatures, clear water, easy access and plenty of other surfer in the lineup.  Here's a look at each Island and it's unique surf potential.

OAHU:
Home of two of surfing most famous regions; the North Shore and Waikiki.  As different as can be, these two areas are true treasure of the surf world. Waikiki is the ultimate beginners playground with surf lesson and board rentals lining the beach. The shallow water, gentle waves, long rides and aloha spirit give thousands of Honolulu visitors each year provide a first time surf experience that leaves lasting impressions. High rise hotels are the only lodging options if you want to stay within a stone's throw of classic Waikiki breaks like Queens, Canoes and Kaisers.

About an hours drive North on the other side of the island you'll find Waikiki's polar opposite - the North Shore. Legendary among wave riders, this area has long been the proving ground for anyone who call themselves a surfer.  A seven mile miracle of surf breaks, the North Shore of Oahu most likely has a greater concentration of high quality surf spots than any place on the planet!  Pipeline, Backdoor, Chuns, Outside Log Cabins, Off the Wall and dozens of other named breaks dot the coast.  There are essentially no hotels here, other than the Turtle Bay Resort, but you can find a perfect vacation rental right on a surf break to enjoy with family or friends.

Oahu also has the windy East side which sees offshore conditions when the rest of the island is blown out and Makaha on the West side of the island is steeped in surfing tradition carried on by the like of Buffalo Keaulana and the late Rell Sunn.
