Pipline has been called the wave against which all others are measured. Surely for most surfers this would appear to be the apex, the Mount Everest, of our sport. There is just something about "Pipe", the hollowness of the barrell, how close it breaks to shore, the clear blue water and the unspoiled beauty of the beach all combine to give this break the title more often than any other of "the best wave in the world".
Pipeline sits in the middle of a 7 mile stretch of beach that is one of, if not THE, most surfable stretches of beach on the planet. Chun's Reef, Waimea, Log Cabins, Off the Wall, Sunset, Velzy Land and dozens of other breaks are all within a few miles of each other. There are numerous vacation rentals directly in front of Pipeline. Many large surf corporations own these homes and use them as a home base for their sponsored riders, sort of the frat houses of the surf world. And when the winter swells hit and the Triple Crown contest rolls into town, having a home here is the equivalent of a 50 yard line seat at the super bowl
