The upper Texas coast city of Galveston has thousands of vacation rentals, luxury hotels, theaters, historical neighborhoods and a lot of fun surf spots. Most of the surf is along the East end of the island where dozens of granite block jetties extend 50 - 100 yards into the water, helping create sandbars. Pleasure Pier (formerly the Flagship Hotel) and the 61st Street Pier are also popular breaks.
As you head south along the coast, about 30 miles past Galveston is the small beach community of Surfside Beach. Surfside is basically a neighborhood on the beach. There is a gas station, two surf shops, a restaurant and a fishing park (with bait shop and 1/4 mile long jetty). Surfside has a couple very small hotels but you'd be much better off in renting one of the modest beach homes for rent. If you want a place to get away with friends and family where you can enjoy sitting on the porch, fishing, beach combing and playing board games, then give Surfside a try. It's the type of beach vacation community where things move very slowly. As for the waves, they tend to be a little better than Galveston. The best break is a spot called "Octagon" named after an old octagon shaped beach house that has been demolished by storms. The sandbars still form best here most of the year. If the winds straight out of the south or southwest you can surf near the jetty to find cleaner waves. The Surfside surf breaks (like all in Texas) are sand bottom.
