Santa Monica Overview
Santa Monica is tucked into a bustling piece of land bordered by Venice Beach to the South, Malibu to the North, the Pacific Ocean to the West and the sprawling L.A. to the East. Santa Monica has a neat and tidy feel to. It is upscale and right on the beach, though there is not much of a beachy atmosphere once you get a block away from the ocean. This hot tourist spot has tons of shopping, people watching and beaches to explore. The Santa Monica Pier is a big draw to the area as well as the 3rd street promenade shopping district. Santa Monica Hotels tend to be more upscale including some exceptional 5 star beachfront properties.
The beaches here are expansive with clean white sand and plenty of room to spread out. The waves tend to be smaller in summer and larger in the winter. If this is your first trip to California, don't expect the water to be warm just because it looked that way in Baywatch. Water temps peak around 70 in the summer and drop to around 50 in the winter. The best surfing is the couple hundred yards of beach break peaks south of Santa Monica Pier.
