This property is located near Playa Negra. One of the breaks featured in Endless Summer 2. This is one of the Costa Rica's best spots. A rocky reef right-hand break, Playa Negra is fast, hollow and can hold some size. It's tends to be bigger than the other spots around here. Fast waves, rocky bottom, juicy barrels, and ripping locals make this a great break, but not for the beginner.

This property is also located near Playa Blanca. Breaks directly in front of the Hotel Iguanazul. During a strong enough swell, this wave appears far offshore. When it breaks, it breaks well and it breaks big - usually at least twice overhead. There is a strong channel current leading out, so it is not that hard to get into the lineup - which will probably be sparse.

This property is also located near Playa Avellanas. A collection of left and right beach breaks and reef breaks. The surf breaks range from Little Hawaii at the north end of the beach to a fun left at the south end. Low tide can get really reefy, medium or high tide is your best bet. Playa Avellanas is long (and beautiful) beach, so spread out and find a peak away from the crowd.

This property is also located near Playa Junquillal. A ten minute walk down the beach from Hotel Iguanazul, this break can get really fun. During higher tides, there are many peaks that offer hollow, fast rights and lefts- the waves jack up off the sand bar very quickly creating a tough, but exciting drop in. It breaks very close to shore in shallow water over a sandy bottom.

Surf Rating:

Overall Satisfaction:
Breaks Surfed: Playa Negra
Favorite Break: Playa Negra
Wave/Swell Conditions: Nice

Thoughts I want to pass on:

Overall the house is everything as described, pictures are representative of exactly what you will have in this opulent home. Playa Negra is also incredible. The beach is a short walk from your property and the surf break is worth it when it’s working. There are plenty of nice surf spots in this area of Costa Rica but the locals describe Playa Negra as top three in the area and especially fit for intermediate to advanced surfing. We were a total of eight - 4 adults and 4 youth aged 13 through 16 With that said, I want to make sure to list the positive and negative with our experience

The Bad
1. We were robbed (yes robbed) in the home during middle of the night. We left one of the windows open on the second floor literally a few inches due to the A/c not working in the kitchen living area (described below). This is our fault obviously, we also did not set the home perimeter alarm that evening. Nevertheless, you are reminded that you are in a sprawling mansion on the beach in a country not your own and viewed as a target for deviant locals as the beach does have public access. Chilling for us to think people entered our home while we were sleeping. Especially worrisome when you have children. Many belongings were taken, but we were unharmed and that’s what is most important.

My friend had to fly to San Jose with his wife and daughter to replace a passport that was stolen which obviously took away from our vacation in terms of time and energy/enjoyment. As much as there is an attempt at security with intermittent patrolling guards in Villa Esperanza, I do call into question the frequency of their patrolling of the property. They are not present continuously, they do have a roaming sequence observing all of the properties in Rancho Playa Negra. Ultimately I think for the most safe experience night time guards need to be present at all times, this is just my opinion. We had this type of all night patrolling at a previous Central American beach home on vacation last year so we have a reference for comparison.

2. A/c in the kitchen living area as well as one of the bedrooms was not working upon our arrival. Mary assured us she had checked everything previous to our check in and it was working. We trust her that she did, but it was apparent immediately when we entered the home those two units were not working properly. Things happen, we understand that. For those of you like myself that book a property based upon air conditioning comfort, this discovery sours your experience.

Mary did what she could to get them fixed, but because our arrival was on a Saturday there was no one available to come right away so ultimately the bedroom unit was fixed on Monday and the kitchen living unit was not fixed until Wednesday. If you don’t open the doors in the kitchen living area in the evening due to bugs, it becomes quite warm. Essentially we sat in the kitchen living area sweating and uncomfortable for our first few nights. Just as a by the way, we were never offered any compensation for the nonfunctioning A/c which I think is somewhat lack of courtesy when you consider you are renting one of the most expensive homes in the entire area.

The Good
1. Again, the house is every bit as amazing as the description and pictures make it seem. You will not be disappointed. The pool is modern, clean and you can see the beach perfectly while relaxing in it, beautiful unopposed view.

2. Play Negra is a wonderful surf spot and lives up to its reputation. Even if you are not a surfer, the beach is picturesque and great for hanging out and taking walks. Additionally there are tide pool areas for exploring when low tide, plenty of sea creatures for the children.

This is a great Wavecation for:
