One of the Most Impressive Vacation Homes in Costa Rica
Casa Ohana (meaning "Family") offers luxury tropical beach front living, boasting staggering ocean views, the famous Playa Negra beach and reef break, amazing sunsets, lush gardens, and ocean view pool. Designed by world-renowned modern architect Tony Unruh, Casa Ohana seems to grow out of the volcanic bluff overlooking Playa Negra beach and surf break. Its soaring curved walls are at once wave and shell, while its clean lines and high ceilings speak of open space and unexplored horizons. With over 5500 square feet of living space, this villa provides room for up to 12 people, fine linens, fine finishes and all the amenities needed for beach living from your doorstep.
Outdoor Living Area
The entry opens to a lanai area, featuring fantastic views, teak rockers and chaises, hammocks, and built-in lounges which wrap the curved southern wall. The lanai looks out onto a 40-foot lap pool to the beckoning Pacific Ocean beyond. Waves crashing over rocks and lava reefs define the amazing view.
From the entry, stairs lead up to the spacious living/dining/great room, with 10-foot ceilings and expansive views of the ocean and southern coast. All the ocean-facing rooms on the main level have handmade 8-foot sliding-glass doors and huge window walls leading to outside decks. All wood used in Casa Ohana – joists, ceilings, stair treads, counters, windows, doors and screens – comes from hardwood trees harvested and milled locally, and built by skilled craftsmen in a wood shop right on the property. Rocking chairs and an outdoor dining table on the balcony provide comfortable spaces to enjoy a book or dine al fresca while watching the sunset. The kitchen boasts hand-crafted cedar cabinets with marble and hardwood countertops and top-of-the-line GE appliances. The kitchen also offers a full-spectrum view of the ocean.
A half-flight of stairs leads up to three ocean-facing bedrooms and a fourth bedroom boasting beautiful mountain views. Two of the bedrooms each have queen beds and the other two have two double beds each. Each bedroom has open closets, ceiling fans, air conditioning, hardwood ceilings and access to a balcony or deck. Two full baths, a half-bath and laundry are also located on this level.
Up another half-flight of stairs are the master suite and office/media area. The bedroom boasts an absolutely gorgeous 220-degree view of the Playa Negra surf break and the northwest Guanacaste coast. Off the bedroom is a private bathroom with an open shower, large vessel sink and a hand-built master closet. Decks and built-in benches deliver spectacular ocean and sunset views from the private balcony.
Casa Ohana is located in front of one of the widest and sandiest stretches of beach at Playa Negra. Perfect for kids to play and run along the sandy shores and at low tide you'll have 100 yards or so of rocky tide pools to explore.
If you're a surfer, the surfbreak at Playa Negra needs no introduction. What you will be thrilled to see upon your arrival is that these waves are just steps from your door at Casa Ohana. We're one of the closest homes in the Rancho Playa Negra community to the surf break. Checking the surf in the morning is as easy as lifting your head off the pillow. If the waves are good, grab your coffee, grab your board and 2-3 minutes of beach walk and you're paddling out.
Come and experience our world class surf, nature, adventure, laid back local culture, and international fine dining from Casa Ohana.
The peaceful fishing village of Playa Negra de Los Pargos, still retains its rustic rural charm of Costa Rica from years past. You will not find any high rises, large hotels or condos or waiting taxis in Playa Negra. As of yet, roads aren’t paved out here at the beach which helps to keep our little town accessible to tourism activities, while protected from over development. Our rush hour traffic is a herd of cattle crossing the road or a stray pig or the occasional horses wandering the road. Most of the locals walk and get around on bikes, motorcycles, and horses and even ox carts are still in use for hauling large loads. We have beautiful scenery; lush vegetation, lots of monkeys, iguanas, birds, turtles, horses, unpolluted waters and pristine beaches. We have exceptional surfing on reef and beach breaks; interspersed with black and white sand beach areas for swimming, tidal pools for exploring, snorkeling in shallow waters, and fishing sites. There are stretches of beach for exploring, long walks and sharing memories. With a community of friendly people from all parts of the world, there is most everything you need accessible to this area. You will find a few small stores with the basic necessities, art and souvenir shops, surf and bikini shop, yoga and massage services and some incredibly good restaurants thanks to several international professional chefs living here. If you need nightlife, a drugstore or medical care, gasoline, bank or an ATM, or large grocery stores to stock up, the nearest ones are in Tamarindo or Santa Cruz, about a 30-minute drive away.
The easiest and most flexible way of traveling while in Costa Rica and to Playa Negra and Casa Ohana is to rent a car. Roads are generally in good condition and getting better every year. 4WD is recommended during the rainy season, from May to December, because a lot of roads are still uneven and unpaved. You can get by with 2 wheel drive cars during the dry season, however the drive may be a bit slower as you will not have the clearance for some crossings on the dirt roads. Renting a car is not necessary if your style is to stay put at your vacation rental and just relax; we can arrange your ground transportation for you, stock the kitchen and send in the chef. However, it is recommended as renting a car allows you the flexibility to enjoy your vacation just the way you want, explore neighboring surf breaks, and drive to restaurants at night or other side trips and adventures whenever you feel like it. We will be happy to help you with your car rental or any other travel arrangements, just let us know your needs.
Playa Negra is a powerful and barreling normal right reef beach break. The right breaks on the northern end of the beach. There is also a left that's short and breaks over rocks—to be avoided at low tide. Shortboards and bodyboards work well here. Consistency is year-round with winter offering the best conditions.
